The finding and its boundary
The investigators reported attenuation of the bile-duct-ligation syndrome under several regimens. The model does not establish treatment of human cirrhosis or biliary obstruction.
Stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 in the therapy of the rats with bile duct ligation.
- Experiment
- Experimental animal investigation with the intervention and outcomes specified in the indexed abstract.
- Study system
- Rats with surgically obstructed bile drainage
- Measured outcome
- Liver injury, fibrosis-related tissue findings, pressure and biochemical measures
- Reported result
- The investigators reported attenuation of the bile-duct-ligation syndrome under several regimens.
- What this cannot establish
- The model does not establish treatment of human cirrhosis or biliary obstruction.
What was actually tested
Rats with surgically obstructed bile drainage. The investigators measured liver injury, fibrosis-related tissue findings, pressure and biochemical measures. The investigators reported attenuation of the bile-duct-ligation syndrome under several regimens.
The detail that changes the takeaway
A mechanical obstruction is an essential part of the disease model. The observation of less fibrosis-related injury does not show that every cause of fibrosis responds similarly. Treatment beginning around surgery and delayed treatment should also remain distinct when the result is summarized.
How far the result travels
The model does not establish treatment of human cirrhosis or biliary obstruction.
A useful comparison
BPC-157 after sagittal-sinus ligation in rats examines venography, pressure, tissue injury and systemic vascular measures. Here, the measured endpoint was liver injury, fibrosis-related tissue findings, pressure and biochemical measures. Those outcomes belong to separate experiments; one is not a replication or a human confirmation of the other. Compare that distinction with the BPC-157 and experimental pancreatitis: many organ measurements are still one rat model appraisal.
